Dear Mum,

Thank you for the “Baby” who was introduced to the colonel and his staff and is now stuffed on my wall keeping watch over my bed at night.

Thanks Bene for the sock. I looked for Ram’s son’s footmarks and found they had bitten H.C. out of the topf of the sock! Bad pups.

Thank (probably Baggie) for a buff pair of warm wooly socks (in my pack) with the HSC on them.

Thank Am for 2 pipes in C. We blew them softly, we blew them shrill, then laughed squeaky notes out of them. Am will tell you, (I tasted her lick. I expected she licked last!), that the No. 6, all finger to pipe, is a beast, and breaks into sharps that want oil badly! Imagine me studying 666121 of the book of words, squeak “Coming through the Rye” and taking over 6 badly. A lot of fun on the band.

I use the paint box every day – try a sunset most evenings and something in the day. I want a few more pencils and a brush or two. I can’t paint for nuts but it is a jolly good way to pass the time on the L & C post. The time flies when you are drawing. In fact the light goes quick altogether.

And so good night. Its Sunday and we had not a scrap of goody all day at the Padre was away. We dig trenches instead and build walls.

Your Hugh
