While the sight of economies reopening and daily life adapting to a "new normal" is certainly promising, putting an open sign in their front window is just the first piece of the puzzle for many business owners. With holiday shopping season now in full swing, supporting local is more important than ever so that business owners can also ring in the new year on a high note. The latest data from the Canadian Federationof IndependentBusiness (CFIB)'s Small Business Recovery Dashboard shows that more than 60 per cent of businesses are not making normal sales, despite more than two-thirds being fully open. Such a slow pick-up in sales was not the big reopening splash that small businesses were hoping to make, especially when their average COVID-related debt stands at $170,000. Many small businesses rely on their sales around this time of year to make it through the remaining 10 months but are now fighting to just be seen against the online giants and big-box stores of the world.
