The 'public alert' came after police re- sponded to five non-fatal overdoses in Oakville and one in Burlington Thurs- day night (Oct. 21) and Fri- day morning. "This is the largest clus- ter of suspected overdose- related calls since the be- ginning of the pandemic," police said in a news re- lease Friday (Oct. 22). This is part of a concern- ing trend this month. As of Friday, Halton police had responded to 33 overdoses in October. Investigators suspect the powerful drug fentanyl contributed to three of the overdoses with the even deadlier strain, purple fen- tanyl, contributing to two of the poisonings. Bystand- ers and first responders employed CPR and nalox- one kits to revive the vic- tims. Police released several harm reduction tips to help avoid emergencies. "Know your tolerance and use a small amount of a drug first to check the strength," the service said in a press release. "Never use alone. Use one at a time. Carry nalox- one. Don't run. Call 911."
