Each week, Kerr Street Mission is blessed by over 125 volunteers who give their time and energy to cook and serve meals to those who enjoy KSM's weekly community dinners. Individuals of all ages help KSM to serve those who utilize our services. Without them, KSM would not be able to extend our hands out to those around us. One of our volunteers is sweet Rose who is 73 years old and who has been volunteering at KSM for many years. She understands, better then anyone the struggle of living below the poverty line. Rose is no stranger to hardship. She has spent most of her adult life battling an invasive, incurable blood disease. On top of this, Rose has also grieved the loss of her mother, husband, brother, sister and niece all within 12 months. She attributes KSM for saving her life during these incredible times of hardship. "I picked myself up, and kept going, time after time. I kept myself busy; looked for opportunities to help someone who's situation was worse than mine. That's why I love volunteering here. Volunteering at KSM got me out of the house, it kept me sane. I wish a place like this was around when I really needed it." The Rev. Dr. Monsignor Pe- ter Coughlin went into medi- cal distress last Saturday af- ternoon (Aug. 25) while being driven back to his residency at St. Joseph's convent in Dun- das, having just completed one of his regular thrice-weekly kidney dialysis sessions. He died late that evening at Joseph Brant Hospital. He was 76. "Monsignor Peter Coughlin served the diocese faithfully as a parish priest in several lo- cations.... He was also very in- volved in the Charismatic Re- newal at the provincial and na- tional levels and was a well- known speaker and writer in the Charismatic community," Douglas Crosby, Bishop of Hamilton, told the Post in an email. "Even though his health was failing he did not want to stop ministering and accepted an appointment as chaplain for the Sisters of St. Joseph.... He died with his 'boots on'! It was his wish!"
