Halton Regional coun- cillors voted unanimously, during the Wednesday, Ju- ly 11, council meeting, to support a recommenda- tion by Halton Region staff that the Wyecroft Bridge project receive funding from the province's Movefrom the province's Movef Ontario Quick Wins grant program. The project would see the Wyecroft Road exten- sion and bridge connect Oakville and Burlington below the QEW. Halton Region staff said the resulting east-west re- gional corridor would en- hance access to Bronte and Appleby GO stations, cre- ate stronger transit con- nections and allow for the improvement of all modes of transportation along the corridor, including bike lanes. The capital costs for the project are expected to be approximately $59.87 mil- lion. Halton Region staff said that, if the Ontario govern- ment agrees to let them us- es this grant for this pro- ject, the funding could cov- er most of these capital costs. "Improving the trans- portation of people and goods is critical for livabil- ity and productivity," said Oakville Mayor Rob Bur- ton. "Today's unanimous vote achieves success on a project that has been part of Oakville's plans since 1994, but the lack of con- sensus before today pre- vented progress. I credit staff's hard work and Hal- ton Chair Gary Carr's leadership and Ward 1 Coun. Sean O'Meara's de- termination for this suc- cess." O'Meara also weighed in on the vote. "Residents in Ward 1 have long realized the need for this regional connec-for this regional connec-f tion," he said. "This corridor will fur- ther enhance the ability to get around our region and is a great win for all of Hal- ton." Halton Region staff said that because a municipal class environmental as- sessment for the project is already complete and a portion of the extension has been constructed, it is their position that the bridge crossing would be considered investment- ready. If supported by the Min- istry of Transportation's transit policy branch, the project will be incorporat- ed into Halton Region's 2019 budget and forecast, and then detailed design, approvals, land acquisi- tion and construction can begin.
