Advertorial Choosing a dentistis not like choosing a new car By Dr. Steven Solomon How tim es have changed. I remember so well how my father would choose his next car. He loved Ca d illacs and always told me that "Cadillac m akes the best car" . It was not so much that Cadilla c actual l ly made the best car but rather it w as his belief that Cadillac was the car that made sense -for him. Being; only six-years old, th is it itia lly made sense to me, but as the marketplace changed and so many other great cars became available, I think my fdther m issed out on an opportunity to drive som e equally good or eveo b h tttr cars. This; was m ost particularly accurate when the hime came that Cadillac was lipely to t the best value for his money but my/ father nonetheless Ifohght another Cadillac. To day's c hnsum er is far b etter educated as to what is available, is likely given quite a bit of incorrect infor mation, and generally spends less tim e when m aking a consum er purchase. Dentistry is not like my fathers Cadillac, nor |s "t like m ost purchases you will make but there are some lessons to take to heart. Below are som e questions that are im portant to consider when looking for a new dentist. Poinds to consider • W la t exsktly are you looking for in new dentist pa tient rel ationsh i p? • W hat sre the hourp of oseration? • Dues the office offer d lrsct billing? If they do, thoy wili be able to b illyo u r insurance com pany direcbly. • How many ye a rt of experience does the d entist have and for how long/ have they Iteen at thus iocation? • Does the office cater to em ergency patients? • How long has the support staff been with the den tis t? Is the o ffice child friendly? • W hat services does the office provide and what ser v ices do tSoy refer o ut? It is i important to und erstand that nod providing a certain servine may notm ean that the dentist is in any way lesn desireable a location to attend. Often s reheral to specia lists is in the patient's best interest. • W here is the office located? • Is it convenient and is parking free? • Do they offer newer technology such as digital x - rays or sam e-day crowns? I would encourage you to make a mental note of som e of these points and think them through when seeking a new dentist. It is not a sim ple process. The above points are ju st a starting point but in the end what m ost people want is a professional relationship. Unlike the Cadillac, a professional relationship involves more than sim ply the purchase of a product for short term use, and unlike the magazine com mercial show ing the Cadil lac's features, the online world can show a lot of good information and m ost im portantly a lot of m isinform a tion. It really is not like my father's Cadillac anymore. Dr. Solomon works out of Oakville Place Dental Of fice located in Oakville Place at 240 Leighland Ave., suite 139A.
