Shawn Macpherson will hold her first local solo art exhibition this weekend at Sovereign House in Oakville. The exhibit, which opened on Wednesday, Nov. 8, runs Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 11 and 12, from 1-4 p.m. The exhibit is entitled Textures & Hues Watercolours & Pottery. Macpherson, who has been a Bronte resident for 20 years, says inspiration for her Oakville artist holds her first solo show this weekend work comes from her love of nature -- the flowers, gardens, lakes, oceans and landscapes that surround her at home and in her travels. People can bring their poetry and/or prose to showcase at the café's open mic (microphone) event. Since the event coincides with Remembrance Day, any poems about war or peace would be fitting, but any theme is welcome. Sunday's feature poet is Eva Tihanyi, whose collection of poetry entitled The Largeness of Rescue, published by Inanna Publications, was a finalist for the Fred Cogswell Award for Excellence in Poetry. Tihanyi was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1956 and came to Canada at the age of six. She has taught at Niagara College since 1989, and currently divides her time between Toronto and Port Dalhousie, Ont. Tihanyi has published eight books of poetry and one short story collection called Truth and Other Fictions, which The Globe and Mail has called "an impressive and promising debut...a wonderfully written collection of takes on the elusiveness of truth." She is a long-standing member of the Writers' Union of Canada and the League of Canadian Poets. In addition to her own writing, up until 2008, Tihanyi wrote numerous freelance book reviews for The Toronto Star and The National Post. She was also the First Novels columnist for Books in Canada from 1995 to 1999. Her work has appeared in more than 40 periodicals and in numerous anthologies. She has published many books and is a graduate of the MFA program in Banff, Alta. Open mike event After the feature reading, there will be several spots available for the open mic. People will have time for two or three poems or one page of prose. Parking is free at Joshua Creek, however, Oakville Literary Café is asking for a $5 donation to offer Joshua Creek Art Centre for hosting the event.
