I have lived in Oakville 27 years and have always thought of it as a safe place for families with a quaint subur ban charm... until the last few years. I drive eight kilometres within Oakville four times a day. Drivers in this town have zero re spect for other Oakvillians and it is getting dangerous. Let' s talk about those w ho feel privileged enough to text and drive or hold your phone to your ear to take a call. On my eight-kilometre drive this morning, three people were texting while in a moving vehicle, two of them had children in the back seat. Two people were on a call with a phone to their left ear, adding more blind spots to their left blind spot and dis abling their ability to react if an emergency manoeuvre is needed. This behaviour was equalled on the three other drives today. I counted 14 people in a moving vehicle using handheld devices in just 32 km. Shame. Double shame to the six of you who had kids in the back seat. You post a `Baby on board' sticker, advising every one around you to be extra cautious, yet you swerve in and out of your lane because your virtual vanity is more important than anything else. Twenty seven people were seen on their phones at a red light; "But it' s a red light, we should be allowed..." Here' s how that' s the worst reasoning to have. First, you stall the flow of traffic because 90 per cent of the time, you don' t see the light change and delay every one behind you. Secondly, as soon as you get to the light you are right into your phone; what if that car behind you can' t stop and you don't notice it in time and ... self security and your kids? Thirdly, by quickly glancing up when the light changes, you haven' t properly scanned your environment to make sure it' s safe to go. You rely on the cars around you to lead the way. An old lady was cross ing the road at Trafalgar and Cornwall a few weeks back. She was taking a little lon ger than the light allowed. The driver, in the right lane, was texting. W hen the light turned green, she noticed the car in the left lane start to move, not looking forward, or to her right, she started driving forward and she came within inches of hitting the elderly crosser and most likely still doesn' t know what she almost caused. To those exiting the GO train, at Oakville, please put your phones away. You have been on a train for 30 minutes... plenty of time to wrap up all of your conversa tions, and if you just got off the train, you're only minutes away from your final destina tion. Your social life can wait, for the safety and security of all. Other irritants that should be noted: Those who use the South west GO parking lot to drop off or pick up riders; please use the Drop Off area and not the street that has multiple `No Stopping' signs. By stopping on the street, you inconvenience many people while you try to threepoint turn out of that spot. To those w ho use the Royal Windsor ramp, to the west bound QEW as their personal passing lane, you're the ones causing the bunch up at Tra falgar, instead of waiting like everyone else. Overall, let' s please be cour teous and sensible. We must put our phones away, when our safety and the safety of hundreds of other drivers and pedestrians are on the line. It is the only distraction we can 100 per cent control. If your virtual social life is more important than your own and everyone else' s safety, you must give up your driver' s licence and wait for the fully autonomous car. We are not there yet. If the addiction to your phone is so strong that you can' t put it down, you must talk to someone. If you have children with you, in your car, and you even look down at your phone, you should not be a parent.
