Custis first came to Oakville as the head coach of the Oakville Black Knights of the Intermediate ORFU from 1960 to 1963. In 1964, he took over the helm of the CJFL's Burlington Braves and compiled a record of 7420 during his eight seasons with the team. He led the Braves to three Ontario Championships and two Eastern Canadian titles and fostered the tal ent of such CFL greats as Tony Gabriel, Peter Dalla Riva and Ian Sunter. Custis moved from junior to college ranks when he was hired by Sheridan College in 1973. There he led the Bruins to six OCAA and Eastern Canadian titles with an overall record of 53-19-1 through 1980. In 1981, he moved to McMaster University to coach the Marauders for eight seasons earning a record of 31-23-2. In one season, he brought the Marauders from a seventh place to a first place team. His coaching excel lence was recognized in 1982 with the CIAU Coach of the Year award. For the past 10 years, Custis has served as a scout for the Toronto Argonauts, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Syracuse University and the Oakland Raiders.
