"The Oakville Terry Fox Run O rganizing Com m ittee headed by myself, is looking forward to setting all-tim e records," said Ralph Robinson, event co-ordinator for about 16 years. More than $180,000 was raised locally from last year's run, which included the Town sponsored event phis runs held at 16 schools. The event starts and finishes at the south end parking lot. The run has a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Registration begins at 9 a.m. The first 600 registrants will receive a dark blue T-shirt bear ing a stylized multi-coloured illustration of the late Terry Fox, courtesy o f M attamy Homes. "Sunday will be an exciting day with `freebees,' snacks and beverages," Robinson contin ued. "In addition to jogging, run ning and walkers, participants will rollerblade, cycle, be in wheelchairs and in strollers." Sunday's Terry Fox Run promises to be a "fun and excit ing time for everyone, while at the same time, raising much needed funds for cancer research," concludes Robinson. An added attraction is the return of Dream, a big hit at last year's Terry Fox Run. The OakviHe singing group currently consists of Kristen Arthurs, 17; Erin Donati, 18; Melissa Griffin, 18; and Nicole Law, 17. The girls formed the group in 1997 to sing for charitable causes. These have include the Halton Trauma Centre, Take Back the Night, Oakville N ew foundland, on April 12,1980 before the cancer returned, forcing him to aban don the run near Thunder Bay on Sept. 1, after 143 days on the road. Fox died June 28, 1981, one month before his 23rd birthday. Since that year, runs have been held annually across Canada and around the world in his memory. This year's theme is "Every one makes a difference." Fox was diagnosed with bone cancer (osteogenic sarco ma) in 1977, which resulted in the amputation of his right leg above the knee. At the time he was diagnosed, the survival rate from osteogenic sarcoma was about 30%. Today, that has improved to about 85%, thanks to research sponsored by funds raised from the annual Terry Fox Run. Last year's Terry Fox Run Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, raised $21.7 m illion across Extendicare, and the Sexual Canada, including $6.7 million A ssault & Violence raised from events held around Intervention Services of Halton the world.
