www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, May 15, 2015 | 26 Local CFLer retires at age 27 King's Christian Collegiate grad Joel Reinders announced his retirement from professional football Wednesday at the age of 27, choosing instead to pursue a career as a police officer. Reinders, a 6-foot-8, 312-pound offensive lineman who only began playing football when he was a 21-yearold student at the University of Waterloo, was most recently a member of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He won a Grey Cup championship with the Toronto Argonauts in 2012 and also attended NFL camps with the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants. "I just feel like my personality is better suited to being a police officer than a football player," said Reinders, also acknowledging concerns about toll on his body. -- With files from Drew Edwards, The Hamilton Spectator (longer story available at bit.ly/1G9FcMI) Oakville youngster one of A-Rod's newest fans One day before moving past the legendary Willie Mays into fourth on Major League Baseball's all-time home run list, Alex Rodriguez made an Oakville youngster's birthday even more memorable. Rodriguez, the New York Yankees slugger who returned to baseball this season after serving a one-year suspension for using performance-enhancing drugs, gave his batting gloves to eight-year-old Ante Vrban between innings of the Yankees' 5-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays last Wednesday in Toronto. "A-Rod walked over, called my son out of Ante Vrban proudly displays batting gloves his seat, handed him one of his batting gloves given to him last week by Yankees slugger and said (the other one) is for your brother Alex Rodriguez. | photo submitted (four-year-old Mate)," said Darnell Vrban, Ante and Mate's father. "I saw (Rodriguez) walking over with a smile on his face, and he didn't have to do it. It was a great gesture. My kid is a burgeoning young baseball player, and now his love of the game has gone to the next level." Ante, a St. John Paul elementary school student who plays for Oakville Hammers baseball academy, now has two favourite players. "A-Rod's right there. He was a big Jose Bautista (Blue Jays outfielder) guy going into the game, but now he's A-Rod, A-Rod," Darnell said. Rodriguez, 39, entered action last night (Thursday) with 662 career home runs, 100 homers behind all-time leader Barry Bonds. THE GYM NAUTILUS Est. 1982 Convenient, clean, and friendly.
