U N T I L Agency receives De Maio grant Halton Fam ily Services has received an unexpect ed donation recently from the A lexander and Bernice De M aio Foundation Fund. T his m oney com es from a fam ily fund w ithin The C om m unity Foundation o f A P R I L 1 st Oakville. The 52,000 donation is not the first the agency has received from this family foundation w hich has a real heart for helping indi viduals and fam ilies. E xecutive D irector, N ancy B row n, said that this year has been a diffi cult one for the agency, with needs far exceeding existing resources. T he gift from the De M aio F ou n d atio n Fund will help to provide addi tional resources. Halton Family Services is a United Way agency w ith offices in all four m unicipalities o f Halton. The agency provides a wide spectrum o f profes sional counselling services to hundreds o f individual children and adults, cou ples and fam ilies each year. Halton Fam ily Services has been serving the peo ple o f the O akville area since 1954. Nominations sought for Women of the Year The Women's Information and Support Centre of Halton is holding its fifth annual Women of the Year Awards celebration. This gala event honours women who have made a special contribution to community life in Halton in four different categories; Health & Wellness, Arts & Culture. Personal Achievement and Community & Humanitarian Services. The event also recognizes the Women's Centre by being a major fundraiser for the services that the centre provides to the women of Halton. Glen Abbey Golf Club is again the site for this year's awards celebration to be held Monday, May 13 at 6:30 p.m. "The contribution that Halton women make to this community is amazing." says Melvina Walter, Director of the Women's Information and Support Centre. "We are always impressed by the caliber of women who are nominated and the support of the event." The awards honour the many women in Halton whose exemplary services to others raise the bar on leadership, responsiveness, action, persever ance and social awareness. They are our neigh bours, relatives and colleagues. Through this awards program. The Women's Support Centre is able to bring special recognition to the roles that women have in the community life of Halton - women who are inspiring, who break new ground and whose interest and action change and better lives. Last year, three women were honoured: Eleanor (Ellie) Van Vliet. Community Policing Constable since 1990; Brenda Dolling, m ember o f the Elementary Teachers Federation and social activist; and Diana Saulez. who has made a posi tive difference in the lives of cancer patients. The guest speaker at this year's event is Susan Aglukark. vocal artist/song writer and two time Juno Award Winner. Tickets are $35 per person and can be ordered through The Centre. ATHENA founder speaks at leadership workshop What's your leadership style? What does it take to be an effec tive leader today? "Women's experiences shape their approach to leadership. They offer fresh insights that are critical for creating a different culture within organizations and communities," says Martha Mayhood Mertz. founder of the ATHENA Foundation, an inter national, non-profit organization dedicated to promoting leader ship opportunities for women. The ATHENA Leadership Model embraces a new kind of leader who leads with the head and heart, blending a keen intel lect with the intuitive wisdom that can only come from rich life experience. This model will be the basis of discussion at the upcoming Leadership in Action workshop to be held at the Oakville Conference and Banquet Centre on Thursday. April 18. Hosted by the ATHENA Outreach Committee and the Oakville Cham ber of Commerce, this all-day work shop will provide participants with the opportunity to explore their leadership style, learn more about the eight tenets o f leader ship identified in the ATHENA Leadership Model and share in the dialogue on what it takes to be an effective leader today. Mayhood Mertz will be the keynote luncheon speaker. Since she launched the ATHENA Award Program in 1980. over 3.500 ATHENA Awards have been presented to women and men who have achieved professional excel lence, contributed to their com munity as well as mentoring and assisting women to achieve their full potential. Mayhood Mertz has been the recipient of numerous awards acknowledging her commitment and leadership in prom oting women. Following the luncheon, there will be a panel presentation on the ATHENA Award Program, with representatives from the Royal Bank o f Canada, The Oakville Beaver and the Oakville ATHENA Committee, sharing their experiences and offering practical tips on how to launch the ATHENA Award Program in other communities. The workshop participants will also hear from ATHENA Award recipients and nominees on what it means to be honoured through this program. Registration for the workshop is now underway.
