www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, July 17, 2014 | 24 Busy summer will also include world championships, first child continued from p.23 Britain's Allistair and Jonathan Brownlee, as well strong entries from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. "It's not going to be easy," he said. "Going into London, I did the best I could to close the gap (between himself and the Brownlees, who have dominated triathlon for the better part of five years). I feel the gap was getting smaller. There's always someone who gets in there and gets on the podium, and I'm a guy who could potentially do that. Glasgow is another opportunity to see where I stack up." It will be Jones' first Commonwealth Games, as triathlon wasn't part of the program in 2010 in Delhi, India. It will also be his first chance to lead the Canadian team into a multi-sport games since the retirement of Canadian Simon Whitfield, who in addition to his two Olympic medals, won gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Jones will be gunning to add a medal of his own. While races such as world championships can help him qualify for the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Jones said "beyond winning a medal, there's no direct reward" of a high finish in Glasgow. The Commonwealth Games will be the first of three multisport competitions in three years for Jones, making the four years between Olympics pass that much quicker. "It works out really well for building momentum toward Rio and Rio is the ultimate goal," Jones said. "It's one thing to race in World Series races, but going to a major games with the security and the hype, this will be a good dress rehearsal." The Commonwealth Games will also kick off a busy two months for Jones. The Commonwealth race is July 24 and a month later he will compete in the world championships in Edmonton on a course where he won his first World Cup race. In between, he and his wife Kelly are expecting their first child. After a couple of near misses, a medal from a major games would be a nice addition for the two-time national champion. But regardless of whether he comes home with a medal or not, there will be cause for celebration in the Jones household. -- Herb Garbutt can be followed on Twitter @Herbgarbutt The Oakville A's minor peewee AAA team survived an openinggame loss to win the championship at the recent Brampton Royals baseball tournament, winning their final three games of the competition by a combined score of 33-4 . | photo submitted Minor peewee A's win Brampton tournament The Oakville A's minor peewee AAA team got a nice confidence boost as it prepared to play in an invitational baseball tournament this month in Cooperstown, N.Y.
