That was the underlying message at the Town of Oakville's recent information session on roundabouts in southwest Oakville. The meeting took place at the Great Lakes Boulevard and Timeless Drive mini-roundabout. "(Roundabouts) are fairly new forms of traffic control devices. When you have a new form of traffic control, there is a bit of a learning curve. People may come across it and feel it's unusual," said Adam Bell, Town of Oakville traffic technologist. "They will see them beyond our community. They're coming up in many communities in North America." Bell said the purpose of the miniature-roundabout is to calm traffic and noted there are speeding issues on Great Lakes Boulevard. "Have there been any issues since being put in? There's a learning curve, and there were some people who were fairly vocal about not putting it in. There were some concerns about its safety, but these are proven to be safe," said Bell. "Negative feedback is not something we've had much of." When it comes to installing roundabouts, Bell said there are certain scenarios where they're quite suitable as a form of traffic control. While significant landscape changes were required at Great Lakes Boulevard and Timeless Drive, Bell said the Town made it work. "We've had to cut into the corner and we've had to bump it out and move the sidewalk around. In this case, it was a suitable answer to the problem. In other locations, there may be other suitable answers," said Bell. "It gave us an opportunity to try it out to see how it would work in a retrofit situation." Julia Wells, a Great Lakes Boulevard resident, said she has been working with Ward 1 Town Councillor Ralph Robinson and Town staff for years in an effort to make the street safer. "It's our families who live in this neighbourhood and we are the ones who have to set the examples. We have to drive safer, we have to drive slower and we have to adhere to the rules of the road," said Wells.
