www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, February 15, 2013 · 8 Extracurriculars still missing at Halton public schools By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Public school students -- in elementary and secondary schools -- have been without extracurricular activities for several months now across Ontario. The Halton District School Board hopes to rectify that. The board of trustees voted unanimously at its Wednesday, Feb. 6 meeting to have the director and his staff come up with strategies to secure supervision for extracurricular activities. The motion asks for the inclusion of volunteers. Board staff has already made such attempts, Director of Education David Euale said. "We have been trying to attempt to provide supervision for extracurricular activities in light of the labour unrest over the last few months," he told trustees. However, he noted the motion from the board of trustees solidifies the board's actions and provides staff members with some direction. Extracurricular activities have been cancelled in public schools after teachers in the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation cut their involvement. The extracurricular ban is in response to the provincial government's use of Bill 115, which froze teachers wages, cut benefits and took away teachers' bargaining rights.
