This was the dominating opinion put forward by members of the public Thursday night during a special presentation on a bylaw that, if passed, will seek to regulate the major emitters of the pollutant known as fine particulate matter (PM). About 90 residents attended the meeting, which took place in Town Hall's South Atrium. Many took the opportunity to express their concerns about the bylaw while others made statements of support. "I'm here as a representative from the C4CA (Citizens for Clean Air) board of directors and we'd like to make the comment tonight that we express great concern about the legislative gap that leaves our children vulnerable to this bombardment of toxic soup that we have in Oakville," said Susan Hyatt. "We applaud the Town of Oakville and support wholeheartedly the work that they are doing on this proposed bylaw." The Oakville rally, which was one of several rallies held across Canada on Saturday, attracted about 200 participants. It has been 38 years since Marc Tigh has participated in a protest. The last time he was in university. But the "arrogance" of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's decision to prorogue Parliament a second time in one year prompted the human resources director to put marker to bulletin board and take his homemade sign to Heritage Square on Kerr Street Saturday. Tigh was one of about 200 people who participated in the community rally for democracy, held across the street from Oakville Conservative MP Terence Young's office, which was closed at the time. The Rally for Democracy demonstration in Oakville was one of 60 held across the country. "How can we showcase the Olympics in a country where democracy is not working and Harper won't face up to the issues," said Tigh, who voted for the Conservative Party in the last election, but said he wouldn't in the next. On the other end of the spectrum, 18-year-old Dan Smeenk is gearing up to vote for the first time, but knows already that he will not throw his support behind Harper's party. The "least terrible" of the major parties is the NDP, he said.
