Now it is coming to Toronto to play for local audiences. My Wife is a Vampire, a dark horror comedy, is playing at the renowned Bloor Cinema on Sunday, Jan. 31. The movie is by Oakville filmmaker Paul Marrin. It is the first full-length film for the 25-year-old and one that has received a lot of buzz on the film festival circuit. "One person said that it was like early Sam Raimi Evil Dead or early Peter Jackson Dead Alive," he said. "Other people have loved the characters and loved the story." The 97-minute film took several years to transform from concept to reality. Marrin first had the idea for the flick in 2004. "This idea popped in my head that wouldn't it be funny if you were married to a vampire and you're like `Honey, you never told me about this,'" said Marrin, who grew up in Oakville and graduated from T.A. Blakelock. "I had done a few short films and I decided it was time for a feature film." My Wife is a Vampire is about man named Scott Stevens who marries a beautiful woman. However, a series of strange events and the appearance of dead bodies around town start to arouse his suspicion. He starts connecting the dots when he realizes his wife is always out at night. Two things come to his mind -- that she's having an affair or that she's a blood-sucking vampire. The movie was cast with friends from film school, family and volunteers. Filming started in May 2006. Marrin starred as the film's lead character, Scott Stevens. He also worked as the director and producer. "It (filming) was very enjoyable," he said. "It was one of those things where I was so excited that I barely slept three hours a night and hardly ate. When you are a director, you've got all of this on your shoulders and you become a machine."
