Despite repeated assurances from federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty that the March budget coming out of Ottawa won't contain any major new spending initiatives, Oakville residents turned out to a public meeting on Wednesday night to ask for a variety of new programs. On the multi-billion dollar side, there were calls for a Oakville MP national childcare program Terence Young and government protection of private pension plans. Cheaper requests included a provision to allow tenants to claim the Home Renovation Tax Credit and an extension of passport terms to 10 years from the existing five. Oakville MP Terence Young, who hosted the prebudget consultation, said he wasn't surprised that there were more spending than savings suggestions. "Everybody says, `Here's where you should spend and you'll get a great return.' The public rarely comes out to say, `Here's where you should cut and I'm willing to be part of it,'" he said. Car slams into basement apartment By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF See Young page 11 A sleeping Oakville man received a rude awakening Thursday morning when an 87-year-old woman crashed her car through the outside wall of his basement apartment on Reynolds St. According to Halton Regional police, the elderly woman suffered minor injuries, but the 32-year-old tenant is still in the hospital with injuries of unknown severity. Police said the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. when a light brown Ford Taurus driving through the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital parking lot suddenly accelerated. The car struck a second vehicle before it mounted the parking lot curb, raced across Reynolds Street, mounted a second curb and finally smashed into 312 Reynolds Street's basement apartment.
