Church Quilt-A-Thon to support Kenyan orphans The Oakville quilting group known as `The Father's Art' is inviting residents to Clearview Christian Reformed Church (CRC) Saturday to watch and even participate in the 12hour Quilt-A-Thon to help Kenyan orphans. The Father's Art was founded last year when one of its members, Jane Burke, witnessed the plight of Kenya's children while visiting the village of Kasarani. Burke's daughter, Sue Faber, is currently in the process of setting up an orphanage in Kasarani. She decided that helping the 75 children who will soon live there was a goal worthy of pursuing. The Father's Art member Margaret Bootsma noted their quilting movement was born from that goal. "It started with six women on Monday morning at Clearview CRC in Oakville, three donated sewing machines, plus Jane's and mine, and we started making multi-coloured quilts under Jane's watchful tutelage," said Bootsma. "The Monday quilting group has grown to about 25 women, 10 to 15 of whom come faithfully on any given Monday. To date they have made more than 40 twin-sized quilts. The quilts, Bootsma noted, will soon be sent to Kenya where they will keep the children of several existing orphanages warm during Kenya's cold nights. Additional quilts will be set aside for Kasarani's future orphanage. Bootsma noted each quilt has a plain centre strip, which is decorated with a scripture verse in either English or Swahili to remind the children of God's promises. Each quilt will also be labeled with the child's name once delivered. Saturday's Quilt-A-Thon is intended to raise money so additional quilts, as well as shoes and other necessities, can be sent to the Kasarani orphanage. The Father's Art group is inviting those interested to join in the sewing or just watch. The group is accepting donations and will provide tax receipts where appropriate. Those who cannot make a monetary donation are encouraged to donate material for the quilts. The Quilt-A-Thon is at Clearview CRC, 2300 Sheridan Garden Dr., from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. 11 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, November 6, 2009 conquer costs ® Combine coverage an Combine coverage and omb n coverage and verage verag nd erag e DEFINITELY THERE it can also save you money ® Darryl R Demille Ins Agcy Ltd Andrew Heideman, Agent Angelo Gualtieri, Agent Deborah E Bartucci, Agent Stacey Sutherland, Agent Stephen Ostapchuk, Agent Daniel Durst, Agent P087023CN 08/08 statefarm.ca® NEWEST OAKVILLE LOCATION GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION NOV 12TH-15TH Dorval 20 905-845-4782 % off th S Nor er v ice Rd. www.marks.com Kerr St. QEW
