OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, June 17, 2009 · 4 Man dies in off-road accident A 23-year-old Burlington man is dead after being thrown from an off-road vehicle in a remote rural area near the Glenorchy Conservation Area on Monday. Police said the accident occurred around 3 p.m. when an older model army jeep, occupied by four young men, attempted to climb a steep dirt hill, located several kilometers away from any public road. As the jeep neared the top of the hill, it stalled and began to rapidly roll back down the slope. The jostling of the vehicle caused one man to be ejected from the vehicle. He was then crushed between the jeep and a tree. He died of his injuries at the scene. No one else suffered serious injuries. Two Mississauga men were transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries while another 23-year-old Burlington man escaped injury. No charges have been laid at this time. As the vehicles approached, police said the Yukon swerved around the officers while the Avalanche accelerated towards them. One officer fired three shots from his service pistol, which are believed to have hit the driver's side window or door. The Avalanche missed the officer and sped around the complex where it picked up the driver of the Yukon, who had crashed his vehicle into a building. Police recovered the stolen Yukon, however, the Avalanche driver escaped. Later that day, the Avalanche was spotted by the OPP on Highway 403, near the City of Brantford. A brief police chase ensued, but once again the Avalanche driver was able to slip away. On Monday, the Avalanche, which was also reported stolen, was abandoned on the Six Nations reserve near the City of Brantford. It's unclear if anyone in the vehicle was injured in the gunfire. Despite this uncertainty, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), which investigates incidents of serious injury or death involving the police, is involved. "The physical evidence (in the recovered Avalanche) was indicative that perhaps somebody could have been injured and so we are looking into that," said Frank Phillips, SIU communications co-ordinator. "We're still working on this and trying to determine if it meets our mandate or if it doesn't."
