12 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday June 4, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Abbey Park student wins silver at Canadian Skills Competition By Hiba Kesebi SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Receive a $50 gas card Angie Schempp's passion for design and architecture was awarded not once, not twice, but three times this year. Earlier this year, the Grade 12 Abbey Park High School student beat 26 other competitors to win gold at the Halton District School Board skills trade competition for Architectural Design/Cad. Later she defeated 23 designers to win gold at the Ontario Skills Competition. Last week, she competed in the CanadianSkills Competition in Calgary, where she finished second and was awarded a silver medal for her house design. "She had to design a house that had all building code laws, and was efficient and cost effective," said Sarah Cunningham, Schempp's design teacher at Abbey Park. "I had to sketch my house design, and then I had to go on the computer and actually design it," said Schempp, who is still in shock with her win. "I really didn't take the Halton's championship that seriously. I thought I'll go in, have fun and see where my designs go. But then I won, and I started to take the competition more seriously," she laughed. It took Schempp 12 hours to create the sketches and designs of the house. "She submitted a full set of working drawings, that are really good enough to go to a building office for inspection and approval," said Cunningham. Cunningham was an interior designer before becoming a teacher, and is proud of her student's achievement. "She [Cunningham] called my cell pone, and she was screaming you won, you won!" Schempp explained. "I had tears coming down my face. I was really proud of her," said Cunningham, "especially that she was able to beat students who've had a threeyear experience with the software. Angie only had one; this is her first year. She's just got a natural talent." LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER AWARD-WINNING STUDENT: Grade 12 Abbey Park High School student Angie Schempp holds her gold (Ontario Skills Competition) and silver (Canadian Skills Competition) that she earned for Architectural Design/Cad. Aside from the classroom tasks, Cunningham met with Schempp a week before the national competition, to teach her "tricks with the software," go over possible house designs. She even called in people from the industry for advice and insight. Cunningham also went to Calgary with Schempp. "I couldn't talk to her during the competition. I was just there to cheer her on," she said. The two spent five days in Calgary. Two of those days were competition days; the other three were spent exploring the city. "I think that was one of the most memorable moments of the competition." Schempp plans to attend Guelph University next year for landscape architecture. 1 When you open a chequing or savings account TM using EasySwitch, or set up Direct Deposit Visit one of our 12 convenient locations in Oakville for details.
