www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday January 30, 2008 - 5 Sheridan gets cash for campus upgrades By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Oakville and Brampton's Sheridan College campuses will receive funding for campus improvements to the tune of $4.6 million, MPP Kevin Flynn announced yesterday. The money will be delegated to three areas the college has recognized: improvements to existing facilities, upgrading to boilers and chillers, and improving campus safety. "It's not the sexiest of issues," a smiling Flynn told staff and students gathered at the Oakville campus Tuesday, "but it's just as important as every one of those issues we read about when it comes to post-secondary funding." This campus renewal funding is part of the $1.4 billion announced in the Fall Economic Statement for strategic infrastructure investments, and part of $200 million the provincial government is investing in college and university campuses across the province. "This money really does give us an opportunity for building renewal," said Sheridan's vice president of student services and information technology, Ian Marley. "It's great. The last few years we got money for new buildings, but this is to repair and for maintenance, which is something that needs to be done. We have some old buildings around here." President of Sheridan's student union Chris Ali called Tuesday's "It's not the sexiest of issues, but it's just as important as every one of those issues we read about when it comes to post-secondary funding." Kevin Flynn, Oakville MPP announcement a "monumental step toward what needs to be done." "Today's announcement by the McGuinty government shows that they understand that if Ontario is going to meet the challenges of the future, we must invest in our future," said Ali. When it comes to infrastructure, Flynn noted its maintenance is something that's often left behind when it comes to budget time. "Often, what we do is we ignore infrastructure, we ignore maintenance of buildings," the MPP said, noting key maintenance to roads, sewers and other slowly aging infrastructure often gets sidelined. "We're going to give you the tools that will allow Sheridan College to make sure you have what you need to maintain your infrastructure." In upgrading to boilers and chillers, Flynn said, students will see effects beyond just heating and cooling in the college. "If we can make them use less energy, you have much less of an impact on the planet, and you have much lower operating costs, meaning you can spend more on students," Flynn said. "This is an investment in the young people and the students in this province." FLOOR MODEL CLEARANCE Save 20-70 % On All Floor Models ALL ON CLEARANCE!
