In the first week of its holiday campaign, the Halton Police RIDE program has netted a number of individuals who chose to drink and then get behind the wheel. From Dec. 1-8 Halton police officers stopped a total of 8,641 vehicles and conducted 45 roadside breath tests. These tests resulted in 11 drivers receiving 12-hour suspensions while one person was charged with Impaired Driving and driving with more than 80 mgs of alcohol in his blood. A novice driver was also charged with having a blood alcohol concentration above zero. Drivers who had had too much to drink were not the only things turned up by these police checks, with four individuals now facing drug charges under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Another 11 people were charged with insurance violations and 85 charges were laid under the Highway Traffic Act. Police said one driver attempted to avoid a spot check by making a U-turn and driving off in the opposite direction. However, an officer caught up with him and stopped the car. Police found the man had more than double the legal limit of alcohol in his system, and was wanted for a domestic assault that had occurred a short time earlier.
