OAKVILLE DODGE NOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION The New Taking back the night is cause for celebration By Melanie Cummings SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER 646 4th Line at Speers Rd. 905.845.4211 careers@oakvilledodge.com sales@oakvilledodge.com Happy Take Back the Night. There are no greeting cards that say as much for such wishful thinking, but the sentiment prevailed Tuesday night (Sept. 11) among the 100 people who gathered at T.A. Blakelock High School for this annual event. Through an upbeat celebration featuring artists and entertainers, organizers celebrated 17 years of coming together as a community to end violence in the region. Collectively they dared to dream what a world without violence against women and children will look like, without sexism or racism, and with increased funding to women's shelters and rape crisis centres, as well as social assistance rates that reflect the true cost of basic needs in Ontario. "This list can go on and it should...so that oppression of all marginalized people is removed," said Jaqueline Benn-John, executive Heroes are all around us they're not in costumes, they're parents, neighbours, co-workers, someone who offers a helping hand in a time of need -- just ask the United Way of Oakville (UWO). Despite experiencing a tough fundraising year last year -- coming up short and dipping into reserves to hand out $2.25 million to the community -- the UWO will again try to raise $2.25 million in 2007. The cash will help 31 local health and social service agencies assist more than 30,000 Oakville residents -- nearly 20 per cent of the population. It's time to pull together for the Oakville community and in doing so, become a real-life hero. That was the challenge issued as the UWO announced its 2007 campaign goal at a celebratory breakfast kickoff at Town Hall Wednesday. The breakfast replaced, because of injury and liability concerns, the long standing tradition of the high school bathtub race kick off. Instead, a lineup of local heroes took part in announcing the goal before the audience raised a toast to such heroes. Those who helped out included corporate executives such as Pierre See Crowd page 7 See Heroes page 2 The 2007 Model Year Clearout 0 DORVAL DR.
