4- The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 18, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Driving the QEW through Oakville is risky business The Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) in Oakville -- from Burloak Drive to Winston Churchill Boulevard -- is No. 3 on Ontario's list of accidentprone highways. The Top Eight list for 2006, QEW from Burloak to Winston Churchill is third on OPP `hot list' compiled by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), is an effort to identify where motorists are most likely to be involved in a crash. A stretch of Hwy. 48, north of Toronto, is the deadliest provincial roadway. You're also more likely to get into an accident on Hwy. 401 between Whites Road in Pickering and Courtice Road, east of Oshawa. The QEW stretch through Oakville, which came in at No. 3, is notable because it's also the shortest stretch (6.6 kilometres) to make the list. The OPP's Burlington detachment covers many provincial routes in this area, but 31 per cent of the detachment's 2,500 collisions occur on the QEW in Oakville. That means there were about 800 collisions on this stretch of the busy highway. The easterly area of this stretch, near the Ford plant, is known for bottlenecks where Hwy. 403 merges with the QEW and for the winding portion of the highway there, both of which lead to many accidents. The eight OPP detachments in the Greater Toronto Area have each put together their own list of "hot spot" locations on provincial highways in an effort by Commissioner Julian Fantino to bring more OPP attention and resources to those areas. This is the first time such a systemwide accounting and analysis have been implemented by the OPP, and the GTA detachments will be meeting with Fantino each month to analyze the results. The "hot spot" locations are part of the OPP's new drive to report monthly traffic results so both police and the public will know where the most dangerous places to drive are. The list: 1. Hwy. 48, between Bloomington Road and Smith Boulevard. 2. Hwy. 401, between Whites Road and Courtice Road. 3. QEW, between Burloak Drive and Winston Churchill Boulevard. 4. Hwy. 401 westbound from Keele Street to Hwy. 400. 5. QEW, between Mountain Road and Niagara Street in Niagara Region. 6. Hwy. 403, between Erin Mills Parkway and Mavis Road. 7. Hwy. 407, between Hwy. 427 and Pine Valley Drive. 8. Hwy. 401 from Hwy. 8 to Hwy. 6. --Torstar News Service The Regional Municipality of Halton www.halton.ca ODD/EVEN WATER RESTRICTIONS IN PLACE Halton Region has implemented a mandatory odd/even water restriction on outdoor water use.
