CHIROPODIST experiencing their first episodes of psychosis. It's called the Halton Early Intervention in Psychosis Program. Each area of Halton will have equal access to services through three clinical centres of service delivery. Dr. Tom Hastings, at the HHS Outpatient Adult Mental Health Program in Oakville, Dr. Peter Turner at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital in Burlington and Dr. Erhard Busse at the North Halton Mental Health Clinic in Milton, are the lead psychiatrists. Each is working with a multi-disciplinary clinical team comprised of a nurse, social worker and occupational therapist. Each team will provide assessment and intervention to patients who are referred locally from their communities. Organizers of the program feel that with a community-based approach, assessments should be provided within a week of a referral to any young adult in Halton. The program is being offered in partnership with Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, the North Halton Mental Health Clinic, the Halton Alcohol and Drug Assessment, Prevention and Treatment (ADAPT) and the Schizophrenia Society of "With young people who have significant changes in behaviour, the possibility of psychosis should be considered." Dr. Tom Hastings, Lead Psychiatrist, Halton Early Intervention in Psychosis Ontario. "Psychosis affects adolescents and young people when they are most vulnerable -- just as they are starting to develop their identity, form lasting relationships and plan for their future. Psychosis can be tricky to recognize because many of its early symptoms anxiety and mood swings could be easily mistaken for adolescent behaviour," said Hastings, Lead Psychiatrist for the Halton Early Intervention in Psychosis Program. "With young people who have significant changes in behaviour, the possibility of psychosis should be considered," he said. "Early intervention with both medication and psycho-social counselling and support can reduce the potentially debilitating impact of psychosis for both the individual and their families," said Hastings. "Psychosis is treatable, but early intervention is crucial. Treatment can improve and prevent further psychotic episodes," he said. "For a number of individuals, the first episode of psychosis is the beginning of either a schizophrenic illness or a mood disorder such as bipolar disorder or depression. Also, substance abuse is not uncommon among this population," said Hastings. "Our program will work hand-in-hand with ADAPT and the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario," said Hastings. "Psychosis affects the individual in all aspects of their life. To be effective, you have to intervene, treat and support the young person in all their various environments. An all encompassing community strategy is vital," said Dr. Alan Brown, Physician Leader of the HHS Mental Health Program and Chief of the HHS Department of Psychiatry. The program was launched this spring with an awareness campaign and an educational program aimed at family physicians, healthcare professionals, teachers, social workers and the general public. The objective is to educate the community-at-large on how psychosis can present in young people, so these youths can be readily identified and referred. Seminar on snoozing without snoring Understanding Snoring and Sleep Apnea is the topic of a Wednesday, June 6 seminar being hosted at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). Dr. Laurence Chau, Respirologist and Medical Director of Halton Healthcare Services' Sleep Clinic will explain the causes of snoring and sleep apnea, and will discuss options for diagnosis and treatment. Arrive early to visit the exhibit area to learn more about products available to assist in getting a good night's sleep. The exhibit area will open at 6 p.m. and will feature suppliers of related products. Snoring is a common problem among all ages, and about one-third of older adults snore. Snoring may be caused by different reasons and can be improved by different methods. Some as simply as losing weight or sleeping on your side, can help reduce or eliminate snoring. In some cases, snoring is a symptom of sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that affects children and adults, and is more common in men. People most likely to develop sleep apnea include those who snore loudly, are overweight, have high blood pressure, or have some physical abnormality in the nose, throat, or other parts of the upper airway. The consequences of sleep apnea range from annoying to life-threatening. It disturbs sleeping patterns and deprives the snorer of appropriate rest. There are a number of treatment options for individuals diagnosed with sleep apnea including behavioural changes and/or physical or mechanical therapy. The event will be held at OTMH, 327 Reynolds St., with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the seminar at 7 p.m. To reserve contact 905-338-4379 or elittle@haltonhealthcare.on.ca.
