There are a number of ways to alleviate this stress for your cat. Use a paper bag or cardboard box with a hole cut out of it to provide a nice hideaway for a nervous feline at a boarding kennel. A safe place to hide, will reassure your cat. Kennel attendants at your boarding kennel will appreciate a calmer, easier to handle animal. These items can be replaced if they become soiled while the cat is boarding and they are easy to come by. Alternatively, a carrier kennel provides a solid hiding space. However, if only used when taking the cat to the veterinarian, long trips or to the kennel, the cat may learn to associate the carrier with bad things happening. Keep this in mind if you are considering making this the hiding place of choice. Consider picking a boarding kennel exclusively for cats. If a dog and cat kennel is your only option, check out the kennel to make sure that there is sufficient sound- proofing. The barking of dogs may keep your cat unsettled throughout the duration of its stay.
