Celebrating 10 Years The OTMH Renal Dialysis Unit recently commemorated its 10th Anniversary of providing an essential life-giving service to the residents of our communities. OTMH's first Renal Dialysis Unit opened in April of 1997 and quickly grew to 12 permanent and 2.5 interim stations by the end of 1999. In 2000, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care provided funding for the addition of a second 12 station unit. The OTMH Renal Dialysis Program offers a Kidney Function Clinic to monitor patients who have been diagnosed with Kidney Disease. Today, the Renal Dialysis Program is currently following 175 hemodialysis patients, 10 peritoneal dialysis patients at home and 700 patients in the Kidney Function Clinic. Another Milestone Congratulations to the OTMH Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program on also celebrating their 10th Anniversary. The Program, which was started up in May 1997 by Pauline Mihok, Manager of the Rehabilitation Unit on 3C, Sandra Bates, OTMH Physiotherapist, and Dr. Laurence Chau, Respirologist and Medical Director of OTMH ICU, has helped more than 500 participants to-date. The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is designed for participants who have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and have been pre-screened for motivational and medical suitability. The program teaches patients how to exercise aerobically at home and better manage their chronic disease. It improves patients' activity tolerance and provides lifestyle and emotional support in a safe environment. Elvis Gives to OTMH! On Sunday, April 29, 2007, spinning class participants at Revolution Health and Fitness were treated to a first-rate Elvis performance by Adam Scott, spinning instructor and Elvis tribute artist extraordinaire. In consideration of Adam's outstanding performance, participants of the spin class made a donation to OTMH. It was a momentous day: a $360 donation to OHF coupled with first-rate Elvis entertainment and a workout. By mid-morning, Elvis had left the building at Revolution Health and Fitness. He is, however, available in Oakville and other locations to entertain at your business and personal functions. Adam Scott can be reached at 416-992-6387 or www.elvisinconcert.ca.
