The Spring Clean-Up Book Drive in conjunction with Chapters in Oakville, located in the Town Centre plaza off Dorval Drive at North Service Road, is accepting new and gently used books, CDs, videos and DVDs. The drive began May 17 and continues to Victoria Day, Monday, May 21 in an effort to help fund local animal charities through the Animal Aid Foundation. The books collected will be sold at the Animal Aid Foundation Charity Used Book Sale taking place from June 7-10 at Meadowvale Town Centre in Mississauga. The sale will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday June 7 and will continue on Friday June 8 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, June 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, June 10 from noon to 5 p.m. Tables will be restocked throughout the event. This year's essay topic was "Why no one should drink and drive." The essay contest was open to all Oakville students in three grade categories: Grade 8 and under; Grades 9 and 10; and Grades 11 and 12. "We received 50 entries this year," said Mayor Rob Burton. "All of the students' essays touched upon the very tragic consequences and negative effects of driving drunk. This message also is very timely as we approach the Victoria Day long weekend, when many more people are travelling on our roads and out celebrating the warmer weather," said Burton. There was one winner chosen from each category. Madeline Mann -- winner of the Grade 8 and under category -- is a Grade 8 student at St. Joseph's Secondary School. She was presented with a bicycle and helmet from Mark Kent on behalf of the agents and staff of The Cooperators Insurance and Financial Services. Akemi Liyanage -- winner of the Grades 9 and 10 category -- is a Grade 9 student at Iroquois Ridge Secondary School. She was presented with a driver training gift certificate by Nancy Danter on behalf of Tim Danter from Young Drivers of Canada. Joel Roest -- winner of the Grades 11 and 12 category -- is a Grade 11 student at Kings Christian Collegiate. He was presented with a $250 personal donation from Burton. The SCAID Essay Contest, in memory of Janet Dooley, who was killed by a drunk driver in 1991, helps raise awareness of the devastating effects of drinking and driving. Mayor Rob Burton, Members of Council and Janet Dooley's mother were on hand to present the awards. Winners and their families were invited to read their essays at the Council meeting that followed the awards reception. The Mayor's Special Committee Against Impaired Driving thanks all the students who submitted essays to the contest for their important messages of safety and responsibility.
