www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 11, 2007 - 41 Inglis rink survives opening loss to win mixed bantam title By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF It was a rocky start and a nail-biting finish, but Jeff Inglis' Oakville Curling Club rink was unbeatable in between on its way to capturing the Ontario Curling Association provincial bantam mixed championship Saturday. The Oakville rink finished with a 5-2 record, edging three other teams that finished 4-3. "It was amazing," said lead Stephanie Piper. "First, it was amazing to win a provincial championship, but to do it in Oakville was even better." The provincials didn't exactly start the way they hoped, though, falling 10-6 to Jason Au in the opening game. "It was a little bit of a wakeup call," Inglis said. "We knew the competition was going to be good but once we won that first game it was like we got our foot in the door." That first win by the Inglis rink, which also included second Matthew Hardman and third Jessica Corrado, would be followed by three more on Thursday and Friday. "Our goal was to have a winning record," said Piper, a Grade 11 student at Abbey Park High School. "After the second day we were 4-1 and we said, 'Hey, we've got our first goal.' We decided to go for our second goal, which was to win it." The Oakville rink trailed Dundas' Mackenzie Hughes 4-3 Saturday morning through six ends but tied it up in the seventh and then stole three in the eighth and final end for a 74 victory -- its fifth straight. Suddenly, the second goal looked very achievable as the Inglis rink moved into sole possession of first at 5-1. "After winning that we knew we were at least in the tiebreaker," Inglis said. It also made it possible to clinch the title with a victory in its final game against Scott Howard's Midland rink, which came into the final draw sporting a 1-5 record. However, Howard played the spoiler, handing the Oakville foursome a 9-1 loss. That left the Oakville rink looking for some help as two other rinks were 4-2 and had a chance to force a tiebreaker with a win. Shortly after their game ended, Piper met a friend from Travis Fanset's rink, who told her they had lost, leaving just one team with a chance to tie. They returned to the stands to watch the late draw to see Au's rink would force a tie-breaker. Au trailed 3-2 through five ends but Mike Flemming's See Team page 42 POSTAGE STAMP SHOW STAMPS, COVERS & POSTCARDS at the Queen Elizabeth Building, CNE Grounds April 13, 14, & 15, 2007 FRI. 11A.M. - 6 P.M./SAT. 10 A.M. - 6 P.M./SUN. 10 A.M. - 4 P.M. The dinosaur museum was as spectacular as the surrounding badlands. We went on to a place called Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, and our guide told us about life on the plains before the "steel snake" what his ancestors called the railway. We fell asleep in the teepee to the gentle crackling of the wood stove.
