After all, the neighborhood will be designing a "runway" just for him. Fairway Hills can now boast a Christmas time tradition. For the fourth year in a row, neighbors will be setting their subdivision all aglow by lining the streets with luminaries on i Christmas Eve. "It was started by Margaret and Paul Gilmore in 1991," said Laura ‘\ Syer, treasurer of the Fairway Hills Community Association. ‘"It‘s called ‘Santa‘s Runway‘ â€" it‘s for Santa when he is flying over." The Gllmores brought this traâ€" dition to Fairway Hills from their neighborhood in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They moved back to the United States recently, but Marlene and Gerry Sibbald decidâ€" ed to make sure their legacy lives on. On behalf of the association, the Sibbalds have purchased and distributed 1,000 candles, bags, and sand to the 100 homes in Fairway Hills. Luminaries are Mexican in oriâ€" gin. They are Christmas lanterns made from lighted candles placed in brown paper bags. "We prepare the luminaries ahead of time by putting two inchâ€" es of sand in a brown lunch bag," said Marlene. "We then put the candle in the sand." On Christmas Eve, families place their luminaries, each 10 feet apart, on the curbs in front of their homes. At 5 p.m., the luminaries are lit, and the pageantry of light begins and continues until the last flame dies around midnight.
