"Stoney Liéek_ Halton Board going slow on yearâ€"round school idea By PAUL MITCHISON Special to the Beaver The:idea of yearâ€"round schools might save money, but it could be very unpopular with the parents of the children affected, said Halton Board of Education director Bob Williams. Education minister Dave Cooke created a stir last week when he said it‘s time to consider yearâ€"round, The cashâ€"strapped provincial government is being pressured to build new schools, while most existing school buildings are closed during the sumâ€" Bob Williams said the Halton Board of Education has no official position yet on the issue of yearâ€"round schools, but he already foresees the potential costs savings having to be weighed against possible negative reaction from parents. "It‘s one of these things that appears on the surface to be a good idea," he said, ‘"but until you examine the implications of the specifics of implementing it, it just remains that...a good idea." Other school boards such as the Durham Board of Education have explored the idea of yearâ€"round school, but strong parental objection sunk the proposal before it was tried. Few parents, it seems, want their children‘s summer vacation moved to a different part of the calendar, said Williams, since we live in a society that‘s "accustomed to having schools open at a certain time, and the fact that many of our schools are not airâ€"condiâ€" tioned." The president of the association representing Halton high school teachers, Sally Rewbotham, thinks parents will be opposed to having their children attend school during summer because our climate provides only limited warm weather. She served on a committee that was setâ€"up to explore the issue, including the idea of breaking the school year into four or more pieces, divided by breaks. "In Durham, they expected to try it with one or two schools, but the comâ€" munities said ‘no‘, when they put it to a vote of parents," she said.
