Description:
This image is a screenshot taken from a video produced by the Oakville Public Library and the Town of Oakville. This video is an interview with Roy Kelley, a World War II veteran.
Notes:
In a very lengthy interview, Roy Kelley talks about his extensive involvement in World War II. Roy joined up with the militia in 1936 and was sent overseas in 1941. He was with the Lorne Scots and trained in Georgetown, Ontario in addition to spending time in Hamilton, Ontario. Being on the lines, Roy explains some of the action he saw and his most vivid impressions of the war. Among these were seeing the tulip bulbs floating in the ditch, having some of his men killed by shrapnel, and being in Edinburgh, Scotland for VJ day on August 14, 1945. He also talks about the moving experience of going back to Holland in 1985 with the Toronto Scottish Association. Roy did manage to reconnect with some people that he met during the war, including a Dutch man who he had been in hospital with, and some other citizens of Oakville who had served.
