Letter – How could Dad – June 14, 1915
12 Essex, Reed Hall Colchester

Dear Mum

How could Dad have been wounded if he is here all the time with me? He is 2nd in Command and will not get out until all the men have been trained and are out. I can’t find any primrose roots here near Colchester. I will send you some roots of sorts soon. How did the roses do?

Went to Flora’s on Sunday last and had a splendid time. She was ever so nice and so were Mr. and Mrs. Morse. I saw the photo of you and her, and she was pinching away as hard as ever. I sent some photos of me and Seal done at Torquay. I saw him again in London.

I sent Gran some Marshall ….too out of this garden.

Yours Hugh.

Letter – Hugh sends these – July 7, 1915

My dearest Child

ugh sends these to be forwarded to you. There is a photo for each of you (4), and he says he will send Dick the films. I have not seen him for a fortnight. He seems very well from this cheerful supply of letters. The hedgehog skin stank so that I shall pack it up and send it to you and then you must hang it outside, for it is very sniffy!

I hope darling that you are well. It must be so lonely without all the boys and men folk.

Yr. Dearly loving Gran

Letter – We may move – August 19, 1915
photos 12th Essex Colchester

Dear Gran

We may move to Shoreham while you are down there, but that is in the air. We have got some field telephones now and so are working away at them. I am doing some wheat stooking in between times. The ferrets are very fit. They got out today by creeping round the wire. I feed them on bread and milk and a little meat sometimes.

I wrote mum a 7 large sheet letter to mum but didn’t post it through you, as there was not need to hustle it out of here.

Cheers Yours Hugh
