- The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, located in Centennial Square, is a valued community space that brings national and international musical acts, live theatre, comedy shows, and community performances to the people of Oakville.
The space had been intended for a theatre auditorium since the Master Plan for the 1967 Centennial Project had been developed, with construction occurring at a later date than the library, art gallery and pool.
The land that the Centre was built on was formerly a cemetery not far from the Oakville Common School grounds, and during the construction of the Performing Arts Centre, the workers unearthed a 150-year-old skeleton that was believed to be that of a victim of the Cholera epidemics during the 1830s.
The Centre formally opened its doors to the community in October of 1977. Over its many seasons, the Centre has evolved its entertainment, offering not just single performances but series’ that members can look forward to each year.
Local acts are also a really important aspect to the Centre and has always encouraged active participation from the Oakville community, something even included in the original Opening program
This year, the Oakville Centre celebrates 40 years of entertaining Oakville, with an anniversary season community members are sure to enjoy.
