The familiar complex on the corner of Lakeshore Road and Navy Street – home to the Central Branch of the Oakville Public Library, the Oakville Gallery at Centennial Square, and Centennial Pool – was originally built in 1967.

In honour of the Centennial, the Government of Canada launched a program that provided grants and funding for town & city projects

In order to decide what Oakville’s Centennial project would be, the town put together a special committee that would consider various options.

The plans were drawn up and construction of the Centennial Building, complete with a new library, art gallery, and indoor swimming pool, began in 1966.

The Central Branch of the Oakville Public Library was officially opened on 2 December 1967, with the dedication ceremony of the entire complex occurring a week later on the 9th

Ever since, Centennial Square has been an important location for the growing Oakville community.

With so many activities going on, the complex has something for everyone who visits

In reflection of Canada’s 150th birthday, it is important to remember the value of this local space as it brings the people of Oakville together to share in its vibrant and diverse community.
