Passing of a Familiar Merton Figure
Cyrus W. Utter Was Born on Homestead at Merton
A familiar figure of Merton and Palermo district, Cyrus W. Utter, died in St. Joseph's hospital in Hamilton, aged eighty-three years, and the funeral was on Tuesday afternoon. He had been in the hospital since March last.
The funeral service was in Palermo United church, when Rev. A. McGowan officiated. Felling references were made to the deceased. Frank Atkins, of Aldershot, who spent his boyhood days with Mr. Utter, contributed a solo.
Internment was in Palermo cemetery and six members of the church official board acted as pallbearers.
Mr. Utter was the son of Wm. Utter, a pioneer of Merton district. The deceased resided on the homestead until two years ago. He was a staunch and true Methodist since a boy of seventeen and at one time was about the only one present to greet the minister at the then Mt. Pleasant church.
He married Miss Waite, of the Lisgar district, who died several years ago. Surviving is one son, Fred, in the Canadian west.
